Diversity & Inclusion in the Legal Profession: Challenges & Best Practices

In-house counsel for Alphabet Inc.'s non-Google companies (the “Other Bets” companies) recently invited Neal Gerber Eisenberg to participate in their second annual Other Bets Legal Summit in San Francisco. NGE managing partner Scott Fisher was joined by Director of Talent & Diversity Marlon Lutfiyya and associate Collette Woghiren to present "Diversity & Inclusion in the Legal Profession: Challenges & Best Practices."

Scott, Marlon and Collette spoke about diversity-related challenges that law departments and law firms face, including those related to lawyer demographics and the personal experiences of attorneys from underrepresented groups.  They also discussed the underlying reasons for the challenges, why it’s important to address them, and best practices for fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. They offered varied perspectives based on their roles as: the firm’s managing partner and co-chair of the firm’s D&I Committee; a senior administrator responsible for strategic diversity initiatives, as well as talent acquisition and development; and as an attorney who has progressed from summer associate to senior associate at the firm.
