As an associate in the firm’s Intellectual Property practice, Laurel brings clients a broad and nuanced perspective to matters, with experience spanning patent, trademark, trade secret, and complex commercial disputes, as well as trademark and copyright procurement, portfolio management, and licensing. She approaches each engagement holistically, developing thoughtful and creative strategies tailored to the client’s business objectives. Throughout all phases of litigation, Laurel works closely with clients, from drafting complaints and pretrial motions and briefing to managing discovery, conducting depositions, and supporting jury trials, including fact and expert witness examinations.

In technology‑driven matters, Laurel has drafted and negotiated a wide range of agreements, including copyright, trademark, patent license, and settlement agreements. Her experience also includes software licensing contracts, privacy policies, and customized terms of use for web‑based platforms and applications. She has served as a second‑chair attorney in depositions and jury trials, and has assisted clients in matters before Federal courts in Illinois, California, and Texas.

Prior to her legal career, Laurel earned a master’s degree in arts business and has since advised clients in the art sector on issues at the intersection of art and law. Drawing on her academic background in art history, she remains deeply engaged in protecting creative and intellectual assets and defending against infringement. Her continued involvement in this space includes authorship of articles addressing legal issues such as bankruptcy, royalty rights, and trademarks, published in both legal and art‑focused outlets.

Prior to joining NGE, Laurel was an intellectual property associate in the Chicago office of an AmLaw50 firm. Previously, Laurel served as a legal fellow in the Office of Counsel at Duke University. In that role, she gained experience advising on copyright and trademark matters, general litigation, student‑athlete name, image, and likeness issues, cultural property restitution, software licensing, and corporate governance. This combination of litigation, advisory, and industry‑specific experience enables Laurel to provide practical, business‑minded counsel across a wide range of intellectual property and technology matters.
