NGE Intellectual Property attorneys Tom Campbell and Mike Harlin will attend the American Conference Institute’s (ACI) Advanced Summit on Life Science Patents Conference, which takes place from May 19 – 20, 2025, in New York, NY. This event allows attendees to gain valuable insights into the evolving life sciences landscape to further explore patent terms, address prosecution challenges, and navigate the Unified Patent Court with insight from in-house counsel, litigators, patent prosecutors and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. We are also sponsoring the Advanced Summit on Life Science Patents Conference.

On May 19, Tom will join the discussion “Claims Drafting for a New Age: Mastering Written Description and Enablement for Today’s Life Sciences Inventions.” This panel will explore how to effectively draft life sciences claims in this new landscape, examining current USPTO guidance on written description and enablement, utilizing variables and modifiable definitions to increase claim scope, and revisiting written description and enablement as technology matures and AI advances. The panel will also discuss going beyond standard boilerplate language to craft a claim that captures the essence of the invention, its practical application, and the context or environment in which it operates, along with key cases like Novartis v. Torrent and Juno Therapeutics v. Kite Pharma.
