John Biek, senior counsel in our Taxation practice group, recently presented at the Unclaimed Property Professionals Organization Annual Conference in San Antonio. As part of the “Bankruptcy Bootcamp” panel on March 16, John offered practical guidance on the unclaimed property challenges that arise in corporate restructuring and bankruptcy. He also provided insights on mitigating escheatment risks, managing conflicting regulatory requirements, and limiting liability during insolvency and mergers and acquisitions.
John also participated in the 2026 ABA-IPT Advanced State Income Tax Seminar in New Orleans, serving as a panelist for “Factor Fiction: Navigating Denominator Dilemmas” on March 17. The session explored how shifting state tax rules, recent federal changes, and new court decisions are reshaping what companies need to include in the sales factor denominator, and highlighted key insights on sourcing rules, planning considerations, and the practical compliance challenges created by varying state approaches.
