Ian J. Block


Ian is a partner and litigator in the Intellectual Property practice group. He focuses his practice on all areas of trademark law, including clearance, prosecution, enforcement, and transactions. Ian advises clients on building and protecting their brands.

Ian also has substantial litigation experience, including in trademark, trade dress, patent, advertising, and copyright matters. Ian works closely with clients to develop and advance their cases all the way through trial and appeal. He recently served as trial counsel representing the defendants in a patent, trade dress, and fraud case concerning hand tool technology, in which Ian defeated all of the plaintiff’s 15+ claims as a matter of law. Ian litigates across federal courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB), and the Better Business Bureau’s National Advertising Division (NAD) and National Advertising Review Board (NARB).

Prior to joining the firm, Ian was an IP litigation partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Super Lawyers magazine has recognized Ian as an "Illinois Rising Star" in intellectual property litigation every year since 2014.
