Stephen is a litigator whose experience includes extensive trusts and estates litigation, representation of entities and individuals in state and federal tax controversies, and trial and appellate work on a wide range of commercial disputes. He has litigated political and policy questions before courts in Illinois and throughout the country on behalf of public and private entities.

Formerly the firm's General Counsel, Stephen represented the firm in all aspects of its operations with an emphasis on matters involving fiduciary relationships and professional conduct. He now concentrates his practice on advising other law firms and lawyers on ethics issues and potential legal malpractice risks. He also serves as special counsel to the Illinois Supreme Court’s Board of Admissions to the Bar and its Committee on Character and Fitness. Clients have always appreciated his straightforward, unvarnished opinions concerning litigation matters and his understanding of the uniqueness of each client’s challenges and the custom-built strategies they require.

Trusts and Estates:

  • Represented executor/trustee in long-running estate controversies involving decedent’s family and family business; 5 separate appeals involving: breaches of fiduciary duty by former executor and his counsel; sale of interest in major sports franchise; attorneys’ fees
  • Represented trustee of multi-billion-dollar family trusts in negotiations with beneficiaries regarding business and trust restructuring
  • Defended trustees in several cases involving attempts by beneficiaries’ estranged spouses to include trust assets in marital estate
  • Represented international charity in numerous cases to protect gifts under wills and trusts

Commercial Litigation:

  • Extensive representation of professionals and law firms, accounting firms, and medical service practices in post-termination disputes
  • Represented major timber processor in action against its principal supplier of raw materials
  • Represented leading manufacturer of industrial products in international arbitration involving European licensee

Tax Controversies:

  • Represented executor of estate in foreign grantor trust case
  • Defended major airline in consumer class action to recover alleged overpayments of federal tax
  • Represented international hotel chain in foreign tax credit case

Governmental Affairs:

  • Represented large school districts in litigation concerning satisfaction of desegregation decrees
  • Defended commissions of the Illinois Supreme Court in federal actions arising under the Constitution and civil rights laws
  • Represented the Office of the Governor in employment-related litigation
