Jason provides strategic litigation counsel to businesses and their principals, advocating to enforce or protect his clients’ interests. Jason represents businesses in multiple industries in complex litigation matters, but also develops creative, cost-effective strategies to resolve disputes before litigation ensues.

He has served as lead counsel in lawsuits before state and federal courts and arbitration panels, representing clients in contract, commercial lease, and complex insurance coverage disputes. Jason also handles business torts, fiduciary duty claims, fraudulent conveyance actions, contested commercial foreclosures, and disputes arising under the Bankruptcy Code and the Uniform Commercial Code.

Jason also regularly counsels corporate policyholders to develop strategies to resolve their insurance coverage disputes.

Jason is chair of the firm's PLAY Group (Parenting, Lawyering And You).

Insurance Coverage

  • Advised professional sports team in connection with alleged copyright infringement
  • Represented global mining company in securing coverage for talc-related bodily injury claims from historical primary carriers and excess carriers
  • Represented one of the largest and most established builders in North America in coverage dispute in connection with construction of a hospital and obtained favorable settlement
  • Represented financial services company and secured insurance coverage for lawsuit alleging a fraudulent check-cashing scheme
  • Represented national provider of risk management solutions in coverage dispute arising out of medical bill review of automobile claims
  • Advised one of the world’s largest restaurant chains regarding insurance coverage for claims arising in several different countries

  • Represented directors and officers in coverage dispute arising out of alleged takeover of company
  • Represented individual policyholder in action to rescind insurance policy and helped obtain settlement of underlying action on eve of rescission trial

Commercial Litigation

  • Prevailed in multiday arbitration on behalf of leading convenience store supplier against chain of convenience stores
  • Represented trade show carpeting company in multimillion dollar fraud suit brought by purchaser of business and obtained dismissal with prejudice of all claims
  • Represented rideshare company in suit arising out of automobile accident and obtained dismissal with prejudice
  • Represented financial institution in its role as trustee in suit seeking $100 million in damages arising out of alleged fraudulent life insurance premium program and obtained dismissal with prejudice of all claims against client
  • Represented Japanese bank in putative class action alleging various claims arising out of collapse of bitcoin exchange and assisted in successful defeat of motion for class certification
  • Represented insurance producer in suit brought by an insurance trust arising out of an off-shore captive insurance program and obtained favorable settlement for client
  • Advised managers of limited liability company in dispute with members arising out of operation of multimillion dollar Chicago restaurant
  • Represented majority holders of preferred membership interest in limited liability company in multiple suits addressing control over company’s assets and obtained favorable settlement for clients
  • Represented property management company in class action litigation alleging multiple violations of the Chicago Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance and obtained favorable settlement for client
  • Represented employees of one of the world’s largest oil and gas companies during governmental investigation
  • Represented third-party administrator of employee benefit plan and obtained dismissal with prejudice of all claims based on ERISA preemption
  • Represented trustee for bondholders in litigation proceedings in Illinois, Texas, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia and Ohio

Bankruptcy

  • Served as special insurance and indemnification counsel to Chapter 11 debtors in In re Imerys Talc America, Inc., et al., including in connection with adversary proceedings against Johnson & Johnson
  • Represented secured lender as lead counsel in Chapter 11 case and successfully negotiated an agreement for the turnover of seven condominium buildings and all cash collateral generated from those properties
  • Represented creditors’ committees, secured and unsecured creditors, and landlords in all aspects of bankruptcy and adversary proceedings
  • Represented defendants in fraudulent conveyance actions arising out of Ponzi scheme
  • Assisted clients with prebankruptcy contingency planning
  • Represented trustee for bondholders in bankruptcy proceedings throughout the country

Pro Bono

  • 2016 and 2018 Recipient of Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service by the Judges of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois
  • Represented plaintiff in excessive force lawsuit against a Chicago Police Officer in a three-day federal jury trial
  • Represented Columbian optometrist in successful 7th Circuit appeal of decision denying her request for asylum, Martinez-Buendia v. Holder, 616 F.3d 711 (7th Cir. 2010)
  • Represented petitioner in contested adoption proceeding and obtained summary judgment against putative father, which was affirmed by the Illinois Appellate Court
  • Represented non-profit community health centers in securing insurance coverage
  • Represented debtor in adversary proceeding to determine dischargeability of hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loan debt and obtained favorable settlement for client
  • Represented petitioners seeking orders of protection in domestic violence proceedings
