On March 25, a $2 trillion coronavirus relief package titled the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES Act) was unanimously approved by the Senate. The legislation now heads to the House, which is expected to take it up quickly and pass it so it is ready for the President’s signature, likely by the end of this week. While final details are not yet clear, it is expected the legislation will extend unemployment benefits for employees affected by COVID-19, provide some financial relief to small businesses (those with 100 or fewer employees) to help them continue to employ workers, and offer some benefits to independent contractors and gig workers as well.
