Employment-Based Immigration Issues: Are Your Employees 'Legal'?
April 14, 2010
Speakers: Michael F. Hughes, Sonya Rosenberg
Documenting that your employees are properly authorized to work in the United States is a requirement that has been placed on employers by the federal government since 1986. In recent years, the government has stepped up its efforts to investigate and punish employers that fail to meet those requirements. This seminar aims to help employers learn and understand their work-authorization requirements, as well as how to deal with related employment-based immigration issues. During this session, you will learn how to:
- properly document the work authorization status of your new hires on Form I-9;
- conduct internal audits to ensure ongoing compliance with your Form I-9 and other immigration obligations;
- determine if enrollment in the federal "E-Verify" system is right for your company--or if your company is already required by law to enroll;
- avoid common mistakes many employers make during the work-authorization process; and
- properly respond to "No-Match" letters received from the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
